A Memorable Image: The Slingshot

  1. Taken during protests in Thailand, the photo has a great impact due to its use of the rule of thirds and parallel lines. The man with the slingshot is caught at the moment of greatest tension; look at how his forearm is fully engaged in steadying the shot. His eyes are right on an interest point, but he’s not the only reason I love this photo. The line of his taut slingshot is echoed by the building, the trees and the rooftops in the background. Even the hats and helmets of his compatriots form a parallel line. Colour is dark and unreal, lit by the orange flare in the background. The red of the cigarette mirrors the traffic lights on the other side of the frame. The photo makes me think of the determination of those who protest injustices and expose themselves to retaliation while armed, like David of the Bible, with only a slingshot to respond.
