Responding to The Wizard of Oz

What accounts for the continuing appeal of a movie released in 1939? Be specific! Make one short comment on a film technique (look at your handout “Film Terms” for examples) used in The Wizard of Oz. Bring your writing to next week’s class.

  1. In the movie "Wizard of OZ", the movie wasn't what I thought, but somehow I liked it. I like the costumes and the music. The costumes were amazing except the lion. It wasn’t good as the rest if you want to compare it; it was a little bit unprofessional.

I also liked the techniques they’ve used for this movie. The director uses many techniques, but what caught my attention was the sense between black and white and the sense between colors; it changes the time in the movie. It’s used as a flash back in the movie twice.

In my opinion this movie is popular because it’s a family movie. It’s a movie that entertains the young and the old. It shows us that there is no place like home. For example, the director uses a dream land, a place that a little girl was always dreaming of but when her wish comes true she wishes to go back home.
I would suggest this movie to people who has children and who wants to spend their weekend with their family.

  2. I saw the camera alternating the long shot and close up several times in the movie The Wizards of Oz. At very beginning, the camera zoomed out steadily to follow Dorothy and Toto running towards the farm (long shot), then all of sudden, stopped at the close-up of Dorothy’s face then Toto’s face. After that, the lens continued to follow them; this time, the camera was still but characters were moving, so the audiences can have an overall view of the farm. Next shot we saw was the camera followed the Ms.Gulch pedalling breathlessly on her bike, closely enough, the camera slightly shifted its angle from the woman to the basket at the back seat, while the little dog was sneaking out from it just in time( the close up shot), then zooming out again to follow Toto running home. This same technique was used repeatedly but we wouldn't feel bored.

The movie, The Wizard of Oz, is remarkable for me. I have seen it for many time, but I still felt fresh and interesting. It not only suit the children but also any age of people because you can immerse in rich, cheerful and taut the dream world. I love the vivid costumes and the sweet music. All costumes were designed delicately, for instance, Lion, Tinman, Scarecrow, Fairy and the dwarfs. Also, I enjoyed the famous song , Over the Rainbow, flowed through the movie. Let me to have vitality and hope to face the future.
In the characters, I love Torothy, Scarecrow and Lion. Torothy was a loving, kind, and dreaming girl. Her song and dancing were sweet and excellent. Scarecrow had outstanding dancing and acrobatics. I like to see cowardly Lion's rich facial expression. These characters showed their consummate acting.
In the designs, the movie ply the panting as the background. The designer designed the colourful road, fields, garden, and the funny apple tree of personification. These scenes brought me to enjoy in wonderland's fairy tale.

  4. I remember as a child, when I first saw this movie, that it was one of my favourite movies. I have watched this movie many times. My favorite scene is when they are at the witches castle, and the monkeys are flying all over the place trying to catch Dorothey and her gang. And when they conquer the witch and she is melting. The castle scene was creepy and scary. It was a lot of fun to watch. I like the Black and white scenes to create her world, and then her dream world comes into full color, so vibrant and a vast rainbow of colors, to create a magical world. It is simply a fun, creative movie for all ages.
