Constantly fascinating, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is completely different from anything I've seen before. It is not meant to be taken literally, I am sure. Its use of mythical creatures and images of deteriorating ice were haunting for me, a firm believer in the reality of climate change. That Hurricane Sandy hit after this film was made only confirms the film makers' vision.
And what can one say about Quvenzhane Wallis? She is, in a word, extraordinary and richly deserved her Oscar nomination. In fact, she deserved the Oscar (as you agreed, Galina). Her work makes the movie; I have a hard time imagining it without her.
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" is more than the most extraordinary and interesting film of the past year for me. It would fit in one of the most extraordinary and interesting of all the films I have seen in my lifetime!
If you ask me which film among hundreds others I could name the most interesting and memorable for me, I would say: “Moonrise Kingdom” by Wes Anderson. I watched the movie 5 times, first time in a cinema theatre, then, on the same evening, at home in translation, then again in English, and finally on a plane on my recent trip to Moscow – twice. I am in love with this movie. I love the setting, all the props from 1960s; I wish I could own such a house with all those stuff. The cast is brilliant, of course the boy and the girl are so believable, but look at Bill Murray’s and Tilda Swinton’s characters! Very true love of two teenagers ran into a small island as a hurricane, destroyed the land of nod and created a new peaceful world. But the director Wes Anderson would not be Wes Anderson if the world would not be so funny and surreal. I also highly recommend his another brilliant movie, “The Darjeeling Limited”.
I had not seen lots of movies on 2012 that I could choose very easily but I chose one from my small library and the name of the movie is “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” It is interesting and super funny movie that I watched on the 2012. It is 2008’s movie and it is about an Israeli man who wants to be a hair dresser. He escapes from army and Israel to the US to follow his dream. There is someone against him, who is Palestinian. It gives a massage that the Israeli and Palestinian have no problem and the third person make them fight against each other.
