A Memorable Image

  1. The image of the man jumping is memorable because it demonstrates essential elements of composition. We first notice the man in the air, placed exactly in the top third interest point. A viewer latches on to the image and then takes in the muscular man, the fact he is inverted. By framing the man against the sky (aided by taking the shot from near water level; such a camera angle is, by itself, unusual), the photographer makes the man stand out. The dynamic symmetry comes into play when the eye wanders left along the diagonal to see a man fishing in the surf. From there, we follow the horizon line back to a bather and sea birds. Our eye then looks again at the leaping man. Quite a pleasure to view a picture that provides so much to think about while keeping the visual information limited to what is important for us to see.
