"I Am Sam"

It seems we all liked the film. Be specific about why (or why not). The critics didn't like the movie but it has a respectable 7.4 out of 10 at IMDB. Why is that? Maybe one of you can figure it out . . .

Don't forget to shoot some video before next week's class. Your teachers can be found walking around the school during regular school hours--9 to 3 p.m. if you want to come and visit us. Bring your umbrella!

  1. For me I thought Sean Penn did a superb job with his character Sam. That could not have been an easy role. I know I was rooting for him to win. I thought it was well acted by the whole cast. The movie was both funny and sad. I think it has us looking at our roles as parents, and about Love itself.

I connected with Michelle Phieffer's character. As she sees just how much Sam is dedicated to his daughter, she starts to question her role as a mom. I to was wondering about whether or not my role as a mom is questionable. I feel like I, in some ways have failed my girls. I know I am very busy and do not get to spend enough time with them.

Overall, I think the cast made this movie as good as it was.

  2. Yes, Sean Penn carried the film. Michelle Pfeiffer was a bit over the top. My old film going buddy and I would call a "solid B" movie. It didn't pretend to be anything more than a good time with some laughs, some heart break, some of everything. What it suggests is pretty sweet and quite far from reality--not a problem as some of my favourite films have no direct connection to reality (The Tree of Life, for example. If the question is "Was it entertaining?" then I have to say yes. If the question is "Is it great art?" well no, but so what!

    1. As a movie, “I am Sam” is successful because of Sean Penn’s perfect performance. However, I think “I am Sam” is insipid because it may be an extreme the morality tale between 1% (or 5%) and 99%. Actually, in the most cases, the people who help the disadvantaged groups come from 99% but 1%. Just like Roger Ebert comment: "you can't have heroes and villains when the wrong side is making the best sense." On the other word, even the movie has a Hollywood happy ending, I still perplex for whether or not Lucy should stay with Sam according the plot of movie development in logical. Maybe that is the one of reasons why the movie has so different comments. But as a movie, it reminds us to take more attention to those disadvantage people.

  4. I like this movie, and I found my emotion was easily manipulated by the actors’ performance. Or should I say I am always willing to give my tears to the touching story. However, I did see some flaws in this good movie, for example, the beginning and ending part were great, but the middle part is a little bit dragging considering some of its repeated parts. It could be better if the time length shortened to 100 minutes. Probably because of this reason, this movie was rated 34% by the critics and 87% by the audience from Rotten Tomatoes website—what a surprise! Here is my rate: I would like to give it 7 out of 10.

  5. I don't have any regrets of choosing this movie because it's a heartwarming movie and most of all, it reflects our society towards the disabled people. Of course, it made us think about our society and about the social system so that's why I love this film.

Especially when Lucy is telling the social workers through the one way mirror, that basically tore my heart apart because as I'm about to go to social worker program, I don't know what to say about that situation because her social worker doesn't care about Lucy's or Sam's benefit if they're living together. And she's so cruel towards their situation!

Hopefully, I won't be like her; the situation becomes another case of working...
