Running Up the "Gostra" or Greased Pole; Dynamic Symmetry and the Rule of Thirds

  1. I love this photo and find it demonstrates a number of important principles of good composition. Besides the fact that the man running up the greased pole is a bit overweight (good for him!), the shot is an excellent one. He is clearly the center of interest in the shot. The diagonal line that represents dynamic symmetry is very clear and the man is on an interest point representing the rule of thirds, too. A second interest point is the flag in the top right corner, his goal. The shot also illustrates simplicity; it is clear and direct. In addition, the photographer captured the man in mid stride so that he appears to float in the air. I’m going to make a bet: he makes it to the flag! Thus, this simple photo provides an illustration of important compositional principles in photography.
