Of all the TV shows we watched, which one was your favourite? (including
“Freaks and Geeks” of course)
When you choose your favourite, comment on what makes the show
interesting (characters, how it is filmed, the story and so on). Be specific
and defend your choice of favourite.
For me, the best episode by far is the pilot episode of the drama,“Rectify,” with “Freaks and Geeks” a close second. The first episode makes all the stakes clear to me: the police reactions; the family (now including a half brother, a step brother and stepfather); the other men involved in the event (one of whom commits suicide before the episode ends!). It is a complex story and one that intrigues as it doesn’t present easy answers. Is Holden guilty of the crime? I still don’t know the answer after watching two full seasons of the show. Instead, I find myself pondering human nature—the jealousy, the fear, the love, the contradictions—and not, often, knowing quite what to think or believe. This is the point, it seems. We can never really know exactly how another person feels or what he or she has done in secret either. Daniel has survived 19 years on death row; his experience there is interesting as well (told through flashbacks). In all, “Rectify” is one of the best new shows on TV, one that shows what is possible in a 43 minute drama.
ReplyDeleteJane the Virgin
ReplyDeleteMy favorite one of the shows which have been watched recently is “ Jane the virgin ”. The story telling goes delightly, comparatively, unexpectedly, romantically, and easily. I like jane’s innocent and open. I enjoy jane’s romantic atmosphere of falling in love with her two-year boy friend. Even the serious accidental happening of insemination doesn’t change jane’s easy life but more dramatic stretches. Compared with Jane’s innocent, her mother seems to be a bad female with her experience of getting a teenage pregnancy years before. But she really not only shows strong mother love on Jane, but also was brave and unselfish of keeping her accident pregnancy from abortion requied by her mother, Jane’s grandmother, while intentionally protecting the father’s identification many years.. With strange language speaking translated on screen subtitle, Jane’s grandmother is so rigid, especially there is always a scene of a pure flower displayed by her to restrict Jane. The director constantly gives shots of Jane’s life forth and back, emphasizing Jane’s cause of keeping virginhood until being married that well matches with the show’s subject: virgin. I like it, making me curious, pleasant, and willing to watching more.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching four different TV show episodes, I think “Freaks and Geeks” is my favorite one. There are some impressive characters, like Linda Cardellini, James Franco, and Seth Rogen. The show gives the audience a real life of students in public high school in America. Linda Cardellini is a good student, but she wants to make friends with some freaks. She always wears a fat and loose green military clothing, but I like her dressing in this show for I find it is suitable for the personality of the character. The pilot makes me think some interesting things will happen between Linsay and Daniel in the following episodes. This show expresses a new view how American high school students live and study at school rather than a regular American show style. The high school in the show is a common public school without beautiful campus and colorful clothes, but it represents a normal public secondary school in U.S. community. Moreover, the story tells me that freaks and geeks both act their distinct behaviors in the show. Compared to geeks, I would prefer to Linsay and her freak friends since I am eager to know whether there is a chemistry reaction. I hope to watch the whole season of this TV show to share the experience of these young pupils.
Of all the TV shows we watched, while “Jane Virgin” employed many ironies, “Freaks and Geeks” showed many funny but underacted (I think) scenes, and even “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” scared me to scream, “Rectify” pilot is my favorite show because of the wonderful characters. I cannot sweep the image of twitched mouth of Daniel’s face away my memory.
ReplyDelete“Rectify” story developed by many characters. Every one of them is personalized. Daniel looked so helpless and stressful. Especially his speech was carefully slow, his move was rigid, and his sight was escaping. I am sympathy with his appearance. The kind correction officer offered Daniel with drinks and help with tie—in a free style, in contrast to Daniel’s stiff style. The defence lawyer is helpful and professional. The heartful sister always helped him with love. His mother was embarrass by her new marriage and estranged from the 19 years’ apart. His young brother puzzled how to get along with the “new” brother. The step father seemed a just gentleman, but his step brother was selfish. When Daniel tried to fit himself in his family, the society looked like not very friendly. The neighbours avoided to be close to him. The police followed when he went out. The prosecutors reluctantly accepted the turnover case.
Until two old school friends of Daniel appeared in the last, with some relevant but unclear conversation, we realized that some lie or untold secret might make Daniel into a wrongful punishment. With one of them commencing suicide, the story has a strong start as a movie does. I believe this “Rectify” is a very successful TV show.
